I'll Be Back

Having been in New York for the past few weeks, my blog posts have somewhat died. I have good reason for that which i will fill you in on in due time. Until then.....get ready for some ramblings.

Can Following A Football Team Be An Addiction?

A article by Proffessor Mark Griffiths from Nottingham Trent University.

"I have spent the last 23 years carrying out research into ‘behavioural addictions’ – that is, addictions that don’t involve drugs such as addictions to gambling, videogames, sex, the Internet and exercise. Just before the 1998 World Cup, I began to carry out some research into football fanaticism and whether football fanatics could be considered ‘addicted’ to following their football team. This is easier said than done as it all depends upon how addiction is defined, and if ‘football addiction’ exists, what are people actually addicted to?

For many years, I have defined addiction as any behaviour that features what I believe to be the six core components of addiction (i.e., salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, conflict and relapse). Throughout my career, I have consistently argued that any behaviour that fulfils the six criteria below should be considered as a genuine addiction. If you were addicted to following your football team, this is what I would expect:

Salience – This occurs when following your football team (and doing things related to your football team) becomes the most important activity in your life and dominates your thinking (total preoccupation), feelings (cravings) and behaviour (deterioration of socialized behaviour). For instance, even if you are not actually engaged in something football-related, you will be thinking about the next time that you are.

Mood modification - This is the subjective experience that you would feel as a consequence of following your football team (i.e. you experience an arousing ‘buzz’ or a ‘high’ – or the exact opposite – a tranquilizing feeling of ‘escape’ or ‘numbing’ when following your team).

Tolerance - This is the process whereby increasing amounts of activity related to your football team are needed to get mood modifying effects. This basically means that if you were engaged in activities related to following your football team, you would gradually build up the amount of the time you spend engaged in those activities.

Withdrawal symptoms - These are the unpleasant feeling states and/or physical effects (e.g., the shakes, moodiness, irritability etc.) that occur when you are prevented from following your football team or stopped from engaging in football-related activities.

Conflict - This refers to the conflicts between following your football team and those around you (interpersonal conflict), conflicts with other activities (your job, schoolwork, social life, hobbies and interests) or from within yourself (knowing you are doing too much of the activity and/or subjective feelings of loss of control) which are concerned with spending too much time following your football team.

Relapse - This is the tendency to revert back to earlier patterns of behaviour (following your football team and engaging in football-related activity) after a period of abstinence.

Using these criteria, I have come across very few genuine examples of someone addicted to a football team. The most extreme case I have come across was one woman who left her husband because of his ‘addiction’ to Chelsea. She told me that their bedroom was a shrine to Chelsea, he watched almost every Chelsea game home and away (including European away matches), spent all their joint savings and ran up huge debts following Chelsea, and eventually got sacked from his job because he kept ringing in sick whenever Chelsea were playing hundreds of miles from home during midweek games. Out of season he would be constantly depressed and would try to alleviate his mood by endlessly watching videos of Chelsea’s greatest games. Once the football season started, his depression would lift. I never met this individual but he appears to have fulfilled my criteria for addiction.

For most people, enthusiastically following your team – even to excess – is unlikely to be an addiction. The main difference between a healthy excessive enthusiasm and an addiction is that healthy enthusiasms add to life and addictions take away from it."

Alive and Kicking?

What a difference a few days can make. It seems like only yesterday in the NBA that we had the Lakers and Celtics coasting to easy Conference Finals victories. The Lakers led 2-0 and the Celtics led 3-0. Suddenly the Lakers are all tied up at 2-2 and the Celtics lost last night in Orlando with the series now at 3-2 in their favour.

The Lakers i have no fear for though. I see them winning back in LA tonight and then if they need to go to Game 7, i can't see them losing. The Celtics however is a different story.

The general concensus after the first three games was that the Celtics were a machine that the Magic couldnt handle, that they would be lucky to take it to game 5. The hype was fair enough. It was understandable. If the Celtics are going to go out and dominate like they did in the first three games (2 away from home) like they did then you got to expect praise to be showered your way. They then slipped up at the end of the game in game 4. They had the ball, the clock running down. One shot would win it and finish off the series. Paul Pierce fumbled the ball and gave Orlando one more chance to keep the series alive. In Orlando, they did just that.

Here's the thing though, the defeat will not hurt the Celtics the most, the injuries that they sustained will. 2 concussions and one back spasm. Add a possible suspension to that and suddenly three key players could be missing for the home game tomorrow night. The Celtics, the public and even Doc Rivers, the head coach has been saying that his team are one of the best around when everyone is healthy. Well suddenly they are dropping like flies. Whilst they may be leading 3-2 with a home game to come, it seems weird to say the momentum is with Orlando and I see a game 7 coming.

I am a Celtic fan. I am huge KG fan for his pure desire to win and hatred of losing. "We do not take losing lightly around here." Do what you do KG. Get the boys back on track.

Friday - Get Going!

It's Friday and it is time to look at the 'mugs', for want of a better word, of the past few weeks.

We start here in the UK and with Kevin Prince Boateng. The German born Ghanian footballer missed a penalty in the FA Cup Final. With the scores at 0-0, it was a pivotal moment of the game. KPB didnt just miss, he hit one of the most feable penalties to be seen at Wembley steraight down the middle. Tears ensued at the final whistle, understandably as he had a shocker. KPB go to either side!

We stay in England and with the FA as Lord Triesman was found to be criticising the integrity of Russian and Spanish officials at the World Cup. As i have said, i feel slightly sorry for the Lord. He has a learnt lesson the hard way. Not to trust a 'flousy' have his age. Triesman go to bed....alone!

From the FA we head to the USA and more specifically the NFL. Darnell Docket, defensive tackle of the Arizona Cardinals has had to apologise this week for an act he performed over the internet. I'll explain..... Dockett promoted over his twitter that he was going to video himself having a shower and put it over USTREAM for all his followers to see. Now at times i like to put pictures to my posts in this blog but i refuse to on this one. If you really feel the need then it is easily accesible over the web but i warn you; nightmares will follow. So an international sportsman has a shower live on internet tv! This is absurd! He claims he did it for a $1000 bet. $1000 is nothing to him with the kind of money he makes. He has embarrassed himself and brought media to his team that i am sure they weren't looking for. He has since apologised over twitter but that is not important. He needs to apologise for his family. Those on twitter chose to watch it so dont apologise to them. Darnell Dockett, get out of the shower and get some clothes on and go to training! For f*cks sake!

Lord Triesman Affair

Well it is getting quite interesting now isnt it? Lord Triesman, where ever he is now, must be sitting in amazement at what a few private words and his honest personal feelings have created. A media sh*tstorm as it is known to everyone who is in the position to say what they want.

Not only has he been removed from his high postition in the FA but he is now been singled out as the person that has single handedly lost England it's hope of holding the 2018 Football World Cup.

Here's the thing that has frustrated me. It is not his fault. It is not the fault of the deceiving little witch that leaked the secret conversations between the two of them. No, it is simply the fault of the Mail on Sunday for publishing the story and splashing it over every page they could manage.

Now i am not taking sides and saying Triesman is a saint and that there is no wrongdoing on his part. I think it is a very sad situation that a man can not say what he truly feels privately in fear of it becoming public knowledge however when you have postitions of great power and influence you do need to think twice about how you act and what you say. Sadly it is too late.

As for our World Cup bid, i dont know how much damage this has really done. Sepp Blatter is mad most of the time so we cn only hope that he was in an accepting mood when he first heard about this.

Interesting to see Gary Linekar has quit his column in the Mail on Sunday saying that they have seriously dented England's chance of hosting the World Cup. Maybe im synical but could it be Gary using a great media opportunity to make himself look good? I think i am. Good on him for quiting that rag. Daily Mail is not a paper, it's a magazine. They and their writers need to realise that.

New Kits - Inter Away - Really??

We are at that stage where new kits are being released, sold and paraded in end of season games. We saw Chelsea's new outfit in the FA Cup Final and now Inter Milan have released their away kit. One website has described it, very intelligently, as 'a bit mental.' Whilst this description throws forward the image of a 13 year old writing the website entries, it is quite a good way to explain the thoughts behind the clubs new idea.

The new kit sees a large blue snake feature on one side. The serpent is not a random design image plucked from google's library of images - a grass snake, or 'biscione', is one of Inter's symbols and also features prominently in the heraldry of the city of Milan. So there is some method in trhe madness hwoever i just don't think it has turned out as they had hoped. I'll let you be the judge....

World Watch

As it has been a few days since i have posted anything, i thought it time to get back into the swing of things with a look at what has happened Worldwide.

First stop is our laid back, Mediterranean and sometimes ever so slightly racist friends Spain. What has been quite a captivating La Liga season ended as expected with Barcelona being crowned Champions for the second year in a row.

A comprehensive 4-0 win in front of a packed Camp Nou was enough to seal Pep Guardiola's second League title in two years. They may have failed to defend their Champions League and Copa Del Rey trophies but pipping a Real Madrid team, who spent ridiculous amounts of money to acquire the best players in the world to end Barcas dominace of the Spanish game, will be cause for great celebration in the Basque region. Highlights can be found HERE

Meanwhile, we stay in Spain as Sevilla qualified for the Champions with a stunning 3-2 victory away at Almeria. Sevilla needed a win and with the scores tied at 2-2, Alvaro Negredo decided that he would make their task even harder by getting himself sent off. The game looked to be ending in a draw until 19 year old Rodri scored a stunning winner in the 93rd minute. Highlights can be seen HERE

From Spain we head to England and take a look at the Football League Playoffs. In League One, Swindon saw off Charlton on penalties to book themselves a place in the League One playoff final. They await the winners of Millwall vs Huddersfield who play their second leg tonight, after a 0-0 draw at Huddersfield in the first leg. In the Championship, Ian Holloway has taken his Blackpool side to the Finals to face Cardiff city. The playoffs have created some great games and some big scorelines. Should be a cracker of a game this saturday.

The big boys, a given that is the last time Portsmouth will be described as such, battled it out at the FA Cup Final. Chelsea and Portsmouth. The Rich vs the Poor. The champions versus the relegated. It ended how many imagined, with John Terry lifting the cup. What no one saw though was a 0-0 halftime scoreline and then Portsmouth getting the opportunity to create the greatest sports story in the world.

A pompey penalty and suddenly Kevin Prince Boateng was 12 yards away from giving Pompey the biggest lifeline in their history. It is amazing what a penalty can do to a player. Once he hit it, it had no chance of going in. Cech had time to dive both ways and still save it. I felt sorry for Boateng at the end but that is the difference between top quality and the also rans. KPB misses from 12 yards out and within 157 seconds, Didier Drogba strikes one from 30 yards out. Two David Jame's wouldn't have got to it. It was inch perfect. Lampard also missed from the penalty spot in the final moments but that was due more to complacency than lack of skill. The fact that he was perfection personified throughout the game, i think we will let him off. Congratulations Chelsea. A just English Double.

From Wembley we head to the States and specifically the NBA. The Playoffs have come down to the Conference Finals with the Boston Celtics matching up against the Orlando Magic and the LA Lakers facing the Phoenix Suns. The Celtics and Magic got the Finals off and running with Game 1 in Orlando. Doc Rivers and the Celtics came away with a Game 1 win after Orlando played three dreadful quarters of basketball. Dwight Howard, their main go to guy and one of the best players in the League couldnt get it going. Perkins and Wallace, most notably the latter, of the Celtics owned Howard by getting in his face and under his skin. The Celtics were physical and clinical. Only a late 4th quarter surge from the Magic gave them a chance but in the end, their effort in the first 3 quarters had left them too much of a mountain to climb. I am sure it will be a different story in game 2.

Meanwhile the Lakers took a 1-0 series lead as they defeated the Suns in Los Angeles. And who came up big? Kobe Bryant. Who else? A 40 pioint game for Bryant proved that he still gets it done when needed. Old age? What old age? The critics will keep suggesting he is slowing down and that he cant bail a team out like he used to. I am still waiting to see that....

You Got To Love The Pre Game

Sport can be the most emotive of beings. It can provied suspense, angst, fear and pure joy, what's more, it can provide all of these in the space of one evening. Sometimes the best aspects of a sporting contest come outside of the teams actually doing battle.

For example, the Boston Celtics take on the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at the TD Garden in Boston. It is game six and if Boston win, they go through. The importance around the game is huge which itself produces a hype that is unrivalled. Oh to be at the Garden tonight....

World Cup Squads Throw A Few Surpirses

The World Cup finally feels like it is around the corner. Once we get the European Finals and the FA Cup out of the way, the best torunament in the World will suddenly get the full attention of football lovers everywhere. With the majority of the World Cup squads being announced, the interest is starting to grow.

The squad announcements have been dragging for a while now. Constant friendlies, unfortuante injuries and players hitting rich veins of form have given us hours of will he, won't he press columns and tv air time. Finnaly we know who is in the running for a World Cup call up. Whilst it has all panned out pretty much as we expected, there are a few interesting selections or omissions.

Let's start with England. Media hype has been at its highest in recent days with the impending news that Fabio Capello would be announcing the squad of players that will surely (as always!) bring back the World Cup to this country. While a lot of Fleet street's finest have been quick to condemn his decisions, i think it is a pretty good squad. He has rightly given Darren Bent a chance to show he can cut it at the highest level. The only query i would have is Carragher's inclusion. Having said that international football is no longer for him, it is interesting to see Carragher back in the fold. His performances this season have been far from comforting, as any Liverpool fan will tell you. However, if he can reproduce the type of form he showed when helping Liverpool to Champions League glory, then that will be forgotten.

Meanwhile, handball specialist's France have announced a few surprise ommisions. While Premier League talent such as Clichy, Evra, Gallas, Malouda and Anelka have been selected, coach Raymond Domenech has left out former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Viera and current Arsenal play maker Samir Nasri. Viera, i hear has not taken kindly to Domenech's decision, as he faces being left out of the squad for the first time since he was part of that 3-0 win over Brazil in the 1998 Final. Nasri must also be shocked to hear he will not be needed after been one of the shining stars of an otherwise dim season for Arsenal. Put it this way, Diaby made it while Nasri didnt. Has Domenech been watching Arsenal at all? Another interesting note is the inclusion of Thierry Henry and the exclusion of Real Madrid's big summer signing, Karim Benzema. Domenech has been quoted as saying Benzema didnt feature enough for Real and he needs players who have played good amounts of football recently. I dont know if he has watched any of Barcelona's recent games but Thierry has done a magnificent job at sitting in one place for the whole 90 minutes. That place being the bench.

But finally, lets look at Argentina as they have surpirsed me and confused me the most. Now, i am a big fan of Argentina. I love to watch Messi play, have always admired Argetnian football and until his move across the city of Manchester, was a massive admirer of Carlos Tevez. Then there is Diego Maradona. How can you not love one of the greatest players to ever have played the game and now one of the most eccentric managers around. Sadly though i think his eccentricity is going to be a negative aspect to what could be a great team. Maradona has omitted big name players from his squad, such as Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti. Both players have been pivotal in bringing yet another Serie A to Inter Milan and also in helping the Italian giants reach the Champiosn League semi Final. They have shown they can still cut at the top level and instead of including experienced heads like those, Maradona has gone for an inexpereienced side. In fact, if you like your facts and figures 21 of the 30 (70%) of his squad have never featured in a World Cup. Whilst i admire evertyhing Maradona has done in his career (almost everything) and i wait on baited breath for his pre and post match interviews as there is a high possibility that something outrageous and sometimes racist can be said, i hope this eccentricity that is tagged to him doesnt cloud sensible judgement and get in the way of what could be a very very good team.

Rondo Lighting It Up

Rajan Rondo lit up the TD Garden in Boston last night as his triple double helped the Celtics beat the Cavaliers and tie the series 2-2. Moment of the night came on the Celtics breakaway.....

Chelsea Champions Of England 2009-10

Here in the Uk, Sky sports, the main sports network, had geared themselves up for what could have been the most dramatic finale to a season in the Permier League's rich history. The adverts depicted two horses racing neck and neck, one jockey cleverly wearing blue and the other cleverly wearing red, just in case some viewers were confused.

The horses jostled for position as they approached the final furlong. All very exciting stuff. The only issue was, the way it actually panned out was more reminiscent of Usain Bolt's blistering 100 metre win when he slowed up 10 metres before the line to look back at his oppostion struggling to keep up. When the pressure was on, he didnt just win the race, he did it in a way that no one expected.

Chelsea did the exact same yesterday as they routed Wigan 8-0, whilst their nearest contenders Man United could only manage a 4-0 win over Stoke. The table may say that Chelsea won the league by only one point but they seemed to have done so in 2nd gear for the last few weeks. Then, when the time came, the clutch went down and Chelsea went into overdrive. To win 8-0 is a feat in itself but when you remember that they have also put 7 past Stoke, Villa and Sunderland it makes it even more incredible. Chelsea are deserved Champions.

And so to United. Even a 4-0 victory yesterday could not hide the disappointment on the player's faces at handing over their Premier League crown to Carlo Ancelotti's men. It was interesting to see Alex Ferguson on the field at the end of the game addressing the crowd and delcaring the trophy 'will be back where it belongs next year.' A big statement but a stated that is expected none the less. While it is no consolation, United should be proud in the way they have pushed Chelsea all the way. In the wake of Ronaldo and Tevez leaving Old Trafford, everyone was quick to dismiss United's chances at retaining any silverware this season. Whilst they only have the Carling Cup to place in the trophy cabinet, they came very close to adding a Premier League title and possibly another Champions League title. One bad week in which they lost home and away to Bayern Munich and at home to Chelsea effectively cost them both trophies. Ferguson will know that there is no need for alarm bells, no need yet that is.

What Ferguson will be very well aware of, is the reliance United have placed on Wayne Rooney. Rooney has had his best season in a United shirt since joining from Everton and Ferguson knows that priority number one must be finding someone to help him. Without their danger man, United suddenly start to look a little lost. This raises the big question of Dimitar Berbatov and his future at Old Trafford. Many have been quick to say he will and must go. I am not one of those. Whilst i completely agree that his form has been indifferent to say the least, i am of the belief that he is a very talented player. So talented, on the basis of his efforts at Tottenham, that it has to show soon. I would give him another season and i believe Sir Alex will. We will surely see another striker and most likely a high profile name arriving at Old Trafford but we won't see Berbatov leaving.

So there we have it, the Premier League is over. New boys Birmingham and Wolves have survived and will be amongst the big boys again next season whilst Burnley head back down to the Championship with Hull and debt ridden Portsmouth. However 2009/10 belongs to West London and to Chelsea. Champions for the first time in three years and one game away from the first double in their History. You said you wanted to win trophies Fernando Torres, were you watching on Sunday....?

Crouch Books European Tour For Tottenham

"An International striker needs to take chances from 5 yards out, I'm sorry, he just has to." These were the damming words levelled at Peter Crouch by commentator Andy Gray, after Crouch missed arguably the chance of the game with a free header, from 5 yards out. Five minutes later, with some sort of poetic justice, Younes Kaboul rifled the ball across the box. It took a slight deflection on it's way, meaning on loan Man City goalkeeper could only parry. 5 yards out and who did it fall too? Peter Crouch. The England striker was given what some are calling a £30 million second chance. This time, he made no mistake.

Tottenham held on for what is the biggest win of their sesaon. Finally they have reached the Champions league. Finally the years of heartache and shortcomings have been forgotten. Finally they are no longer 'the other' team in North London.

Harry Redknapp knows that this is the beginning of the journey. He will be quick to correct any players who think the hard work has been done. Their joy at reaching the Champions league may be unfounded but Redknapp will explain that their reward is simple. It means they need to work harder, to train more intensely and most importantly, play even better than they have done this year. No longer is the North London derby or their fascinating battles with Chelsea going to be the biggets games of the season. They, given that they get through their qualifier, are challenging Europe's elite. Tottneham have wanted to be a great club. They are halfway there. Consitency from now on will determine how close they get to their goal.

That aside, hats off to redknapp and his coaching team. Years ago, Tottenham teams of old will have fallen away in the latter stages of the season. Not so this year. In fact they have started to look more dangerous. City should take note. Both teams play a similar way. Wide wing men getting at the full backs with a holding midfielder allowing the more creative player ahead of him to pull the strings. The one and major difference i saw between the two teams was Peter Crouch. When City would play the ball into Adebayor, more often than not, he would get dispossessed meaning they would have to go directly to Bellamy and Johnson. In doing so, the centre backs King and Dawson can tuck in behind their full backs and give them cover. Tottenham however would find Crouch and the ball would stick. He may not look stylish in doing so, at times he looks like he may fall over but he keeps it and brings Bale and Lennon into play well. With the ball going into Crouch before finding it's way wide, it gives the widemen space as they receive the ball. Space and pace terrify defenders.

And so finally, what next for Mancini? He looked dejected and confused at the final whistle. How could City not get the goal needed with all that firepower on the fire. He looked like a man who could not find the answer. Regardless of wether he goes or stays, City have had their best season in years. However, here's the thing. Mark Hughes was sacked and we were told that the reason was that they didnt feel he would reach the 70 point target the owners had set for City. Should someone gently make the owners aware that after last night's result the maximum points City can end on is 69? I would be more than willing too....

Happy time people

It's Wednesday, we are halfway through the week and in ode to the great PTI show, it's time to get happy.

Firstly Happy Anniversairy to Sunderland fans. On this day in 1973 you beat Leeds United 1-0 in the FA Cup Final. In doing so, you became the firt side to win the FA Cup whilst fielding a side with no full internationals.

Happy Birthday James Cracknell. Born in 1972, Cracknell is undoubtedly one of Britains most succesful rowers. Now a turned journalist/ tv presenter Cracknell can list 2 Olympic gold medals and 6 World Championships Gold in his achievements.

Happy Birthday Chris Brown. Brown turns 21 and is one of the most succesfull young singers in the music business at this current time. With a double platinum debut album behind under his belt, his reputation took a slight knocn when he pleaded guilty to assault on, then girlfriend and fellow signer, Rihanna. Brown was sentenced with 5 years probation and six months commuity service.

Finally, many respects to William (Bill) Musselman. Bill was an American Basketball coach in many division but most notably in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers, The Minnesota Timberwolves and The Portland Trailblazers. Known throughout the game for his passion, he is remembered best for one of his most famous quotes. "Defeat is worse than death, because you have to live with defeat."

Judgement Day For Spurs and City

Well this is it. A game that has so much hype around it, it is almost like a title decider. In one corner we have Tottenham Hotspur. For Spurs, it has been years of hope and promise. We have seen years of 11th place finishes being coupled with 'we should be in the top four,' statements. We have seen Champions League football only one game away, only for West Ham and Lasagna to get in the way. For Spurs, the Champions League has been a dream, an oasis on the horizon that, as soon they get close to it, disappears before they can even dip their toe in the water.

In the other corner we have Manchester City, a sudden contender in the Premier League. Unlike Spurs, City have not trekked across the desert for years to find the oasis. They have been flown in, sat first class and simply are just waiting to clear customs. Their fans have not felt the heartache of failing to make it over the final hurdle. They are in unfamiliar territory yet due to the endless financial backing they have at their disposal, they have this air of arrogance. The believe that this is their destiny.

Only a fool would agree and that fool would most likely be clad head to toe in sky blue Man City gear. But even if you don't like it, you have to accept it, City are going to be there sooner or later. The big question is, will they do it first time?

Looking at the last five games, Tottenham are most definitely the in form side at the moment. Victories over rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have shown their ability to challenge the big sides this season. City meanwhile have shown their ability to dispose easily of the weaker sides in the league and also spring a surprise on the 'big boys,' most notably by doing the double over Chelsea.

What is guranteed is that it will be a fascinating encounter. This game means so much for each club. If Tottenham come away with anything but a defeat, they will almost be guaranteed that coveted fourth place finish. It will inject around £20 million into the club and suddenly, given that they win their qualifying game at the start of next year's campaign, they will be dining with the finest at European football's top table.

Man City need all three points. Anything less and they will have to settle with 5th place. If they acheive those three points however, the cash injection will mean nothing to them. To the owners of the richest club in the world, £20 million has only one use and that's as a wedge to balance the awkwardly unstable table in the boardroom. What the three points and Champions League football will mean most to City and it's Arabic Owners, is recognition. Suddenly they have an aura. If this is acheived, which by the way i severely hope it isnt, not least because i'm a United fan but if it is, here's the thing. It will open the cheque book to possibly the biggest summer spending spree football has seen. Suddenly the big names like Kaka, who turned down City before as they were'nt a big enough club, will sit up and take note. Not only will they consider coming to City to play on a wage that is even far fetched on Championship Manager but they will also be playing in Europe and quite possibly challenging Chelsea and United for the Premier League.

If Mancini's men beat Spurs tonight, the Manchester City Brochure, that up until now had blank pages in the European section, will have been edited, completed and already in the post, winging it's way to Europes elite. Sadly, if they lose tonight, roberto Mancini may not even feature in said Brochure.

New Drake - Find Your Love

Next track of Drake's hugely anticipated album Thank Me Later.

Kobe Bryant

Great clip of Kobe doing what he does best.

The Fordham Flyer

Brilliant way to guarantee you get home.

Sheep Surfing

Ridiculous.....

Name on the Trophy

Well, where was the drama? After a season that has been more unpredictable than a certain roulette table at the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas (not my finest hour), we all were waiting with baited breath for the footballing script writers to conjure up yet another twist in their best selling season to date. Sadly, it never arrived.

The closest thing we got to madness was Steven Gerrard supplying Didier Drogba with the simplest of goals, an act that hasn't exactly improved relations between himself and United fans worldwide. As the second goal went in, any hopes that followers of the Red Devils had that their dreaded enemy would do them favour vanished into the Meryside air. With Wigan at home for Chelsea next week, the title is theirs.

United went about their business later that afternoon as they put away Sunderland 1-0. It could have been four or five had Dimitar Berbatov not left his finishing touch in the locker at White Hart Lane when he moved to Old Trafford. I feel for the Bulgarian. He could be out of OT this summer. I, unlike many fans, would give him another season however if he performs the same way he has done this year it could ruin his footballing career, let alone his United one.

One thing that made me laugh when watching the Liverpool game was a banner held aloft in the Kop. It simply read 'Gary Neville or Chelsea.' It was not followed by a question mark as it was not a question. It was a statemen. A statement of how bad a situtaion Benitez's men were in. Lose and they all but lost their Champions League spot. Win and they lost their league record, which they currently hold with United.

There was a lot of talk this week, mainly from Liverpool fans, that Gerrard and his team were going to 'throw' the game to stop United from becoming England's greatest team. After the back pass, a few eyebrows were raised. But there was no way Liverpool threw this game. The talk of them throwing the game comes down the simple fact that the fans knew they were not good enough to win in the first place. Liverpool have had a dreadful season. They have had issues with beach balls, strikers and defenders. In fact they have pretty much played with 10 men all season when Insua plays. Insua is that rare gem in football, a defender who can't defend.

So it looks like there will be a party on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. Unless the script writers have saved the biggest shock of all for the season finale? Sadly, as Fergie said, United and their fans are now clutching at straws.

Celtics Hold off Cavs in Cleveland

Ray Allen put up some big numbers, even outscoring the Cavaliers single handedly in the thrid quarter.

The Cavs led by, as expected, Lebron James, rallied to push the Celtics in the fourth quarter but Doc River's men held on to level the series 1-1.

The Celtics are clearly fired up for the series, with one voice being heard over all the others while walking into the dressing room. "Yeah, we won but let's finish off the f*cking game.'

Sergio Busquets

I know i have mentioned this in a few posts before but just found a picture that i thought i should share.

The photo above is the unfortunate moment for Sergio Busquets when a camerman snapped a shot of him performing one of the worst acts of cheating in the last ten years. It ranks up there with Rivaldos 'face' grab in 2002.

Busquets had been caught by a stray hand from Thiago Motta. Yes it did make contact but it came with the sort of force that wouldnt disturb a column of smoke. However, Busquets did go down as if hit by Floyd Mayweather and then glanced up through his hands to see what action the referee was taking. Motta got the red card and Busquets was up.

Motta has since come out saying it proves Barca are cheats and that Busquet's actions are 'disgusting.' Yes it was wrong but Motta, don't act as if you are a saint. You cheated like anyone else on that field that night. Your centre backs grabbed, elbowed and ripped anything that came near them. Then, you may not have deserved to go for the slap to Busquet's face but you deserved to go for your childish actions afterwards. I hope its a warm night on the Champions League Final, because you won't be taking part. Deal with it.

As for Busquets, i am a big fan of you and have been as you have come up through the ranks. But don't start these sort of games. Don't get sucked into the play acting. Sort it out.....Sergio Busquets, it's Friday night, go to your room!

How's it all going to end?

We are nearly there. After all the twists and turns over the season we are two weekends away from knowing who will be lifting the famous trophy. How will it end? There are two scenarios....let me explain.

Ending 1 - Those backing Sir Alex Ferguson's men look away now.

It is 13:30 and Anfield is rocking to the sound of You'll never walk alone. Chelsea fans are in full voice. Neutrals up and down the country are pouring pints, settling down with friends and predicting first scorers. You have to love football.

The game kicks off and the Anfield crowd are in great voice until Chelsea strike. Didier Drogba, who has caused Liverpool countless nightmares over the years, is on hand to finish a loose ball in the six yard box. Chelsea fans rejoice, Liverpool fans go silent whilst United fans all over the world have their head in their hands. The game is played out with Chelsea in second gear and not really being threatened by a Liverpool attack that shows clear signs of tiredness after extra time against Athletico Madrid. The final whistle blows and Chelsea have cleared their last remaining tough hurdle (with all due respect to Wigan).
The attention turns to Sir Alex Ferguson and his charges. Rooney doesnt feature and neither doesnt Ferdinand. Sunderland pack the midfield and the end result is a draw. Three points is now the gap but due to the goal difference, it is impossible for United to regain their title. Chelsea go into their last home game in party mood. The title returns back to South West London!

Ending 2 - Those backing Carlo Ancelloti's men look away now.

It is 13:30 and Anfield is rocking to the sound of You'll never walk alone. Chelsea fans are in full voice. Neutrals up and down the country are pouring pints, settling down with friends and predicting first scorers. You have to love football.

The game kicks off and the Anfield crowd are in great voice. A nervy enocunter sees little goalmouth action in the first half. The second 45 starts in similar fashion until Steven Gerrard strikes. The man booed and jeered by United supporters ever since he became a first team regular at Liverpool strikes a killer blow in Chelsea's title hopes. The goal brings a Chelsea on slaught but Agger and Carragher banish the demons of Drogba and stand firm. The final whistle goes. Chelsea fans are silent, Liverpool fans sing the praises of their players who have played for nothing but pride whilst Untied fans thank the enemy for giving them a chance at glory.

45 minutes later and United kick off with Wayne Rooney leading the line. Their is a zip in their play, with Rooney being instrumental. Untied win the game with Darren Gibson and Dimitar Berbatov scoring. United lead the league by two points and after both themselves and Chelsea win on the final day, Sir Alex Ferguson becomes the first manager to win 4 Premiership titles in a row. The title returns to Sir Matt Busby Way!

So which one are you going with? In my honest opinion, whilst it won't exactly pan out like i say, scenario 1 will be the one that we read about on Monday morning. With home games left for each team on the last weekend of the league and against weak opposition (with all due respects again to Wigan and Stoke), this can be the only weekend that upsets the title. Whoever leads come Monday morning will be champions.

NBA -Where the unexpected happens?

The NBA playoffs started this year with the same air of formalitiy that it usually does. There were certain things we could predict, thigns that we expected to happen.

For example, the Celtics would prevail. A given we expected more of a fight from Miami Heat and D-Wade. D-Wade put up some impressive number throughout the series but the Heat were too heavy a team for him to carry and the Celtics ran out convincing 4-1 series winners.

We then expected the Cavaliers to cruise through their series with the Bulls. They did so. We also expected them to look to Lebron more often than not. Boy did they do that too. Washington Post columnist and PTI anchor Tony Kornheiser has been saying for a while that the Cav's downfall could come from over relying on their star man. Im starting to see sense in his thinking. I mean over three games he put up 105 points! That's averaging 35 points a game! He can't continue like that. At the beginning of the playoffs i saw the Celtics and Cavs progressing to meet each other like they have. I also saw an easy Cav victory but now im not so sure. Being a Celtic's fan it may be hope over honesty. We shall see.

Now here's the thing. The playoffs have finally served up a shock. The Lakers have found it tough against the Oaklahoma City Thunder. I add that the series is not over and game six is to take place tonight in Oaklahoma but that is what is so shocking and unexpected. The series is still alive. People wrote off the Thunder before this. 'They won't win a game.' ' They may win one at home but that's it.' These were some of the things coming from sports blogs, columns and interviews around the world. But in Kevin Durrant (sure to be a huge star in Basketball) they have a weapon and in their home crowd they have a support that not only breeds confidence but also belief. If the Thunder can win Game 6 at home and create a wave of optimism then who knows. We could have the shock of all shocks in the first round. Kevin Garnett has said it before.....anything is possible.

The Translator Triumphs

So the final that no one expected, let alone many people wanting. We won't see Real Madrid's million dollar cast trying to prove that money can buy you happiness. We won't see any representatives of the big four from England, a big four who have dominated the latter stages of this competition for the last six years. And now we wont see Football's artists Barcelona grace the arena of their fiercest rivals. Like the Premier League this season, the Champions League has been just as surprising.
Here's the thing though, should we be surprised by last night's result from the Camp Nou? Clearly those of Catalan persuasion will say yes and those residing in the 'Inter' suburbs of Milan will whole heartedly disagree.

For me, there should be no surprise. This is Jose Mourinho, a man surrounded by superlatives. A man who craves attention but deserves every ray of spotlight that shines upon him. Beating Barcelona, with 11 mean and a 3-1 head start would have further fueled the hype. Doing it with ten men says it is time for us all to belief it.

Inter were marshaled superbly. in Lucio and Samuel they had the wiliest of veterans. Whilst watching the way they cheated their way through the game, you have to admire the way in which they do so. On the note of cheating, i am a big fan of Sergio Busquettes but sadly that is not acceptable. The sly look through the fingers to the referee is wrong and hopefully the media furore that will follow will embarrass him enough for him to eradicate it from his game.

Another note that angered me was the way in which Mourinho celebrated the evening's events. I am all for passion and heart on the sleeve stuff but maybe that was too much. I know he was acknowledging his own fans but do that once you have thanked Guardiola and once you have done the post match formalities. You have not won the trophy yet.

And i'll get my self out of here on this. Where was the Lionel Messi show that we craved? Inter hounded him, sometimes 3 players at his feet as soon as the ball arrived. He was shackled and only on two occasions did we see him threaten to make an impact on the game. It is all very well saying he was marked out of the game as that is football. It would seem like the most sensible thing for an opposing manager to do but the great players and those who want to be remembered as great, still find space for themselves. While Ronaldo has not been anywhere close to the level of the small Argentinean this season, he still managed to find that extra yard and make an impact on a game when hounded by the opposition when he was flying last season. However here's the thing, Messi's chance for greatness is not over, hell it has hasn't even begun. It starts in June and if he shines, nights like this will be completely forgotten.

White prejudice in NFL?

Interesting thoughts coming from the NFL and ESPN's PTI show. Anchors Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilborn discussed this week that teams were reluctant to draft white running backs. Kornheiser stated, "People become afraid of what is rare and unique. These teams look around and think 'there are no other white running backs, why should we have one.''

It is an interesting point to make in a country where many of it's sports are beginning to see a soft racial divide. I say soft because it is not a hatred of someone else due to their skin colour. It is simply a lack of belief that they can get the job done as well as someone else, because of their colour. Either way it is racist and is wrong however no one is admitting it. The only reason it comes to people's attention is when they see the situation they are in. Take the NBA. There are fewer and fewer white players in the league. Look at the NFL and there are very few Black Quarterbacks. Now add white running backs to that and things could start to become interesting.

Rivalry in Sport - Good to see some honesty

Good to see some honesty in sport in today's world. That is what we have from our American friends in the NBA. The Dallas Mavericks face the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA playoffs leading the series 1-0.

But what made me sit up and also brought a smile to my face was a quote from the Dallas Mavericks Owner, Mark Cuban.
When talking about the rivalry between the two teams he stated that he felt it was as acrimonious as it had ever been. And to quote the words he used following that, he said, "No i mean i hate the Spurs. I have a hard time being civil to (Spurs Owner) Peter Holt." Listen to that again...."i hate the Spurs." Strong words; that is agreed. No real reason to say them; that too is agreed but what many don't agree, well with me anyway, is that his comment has made the Playoff series between those two so much more. It has increased the intensity, increased the interest and increased the prize at stake. Abuse and violence rivalry in sport should not be tolerated, that is agreed worldwide. However this, this is great. When sport and winning becomes meaningful, it too becomes encaptivating. Did Cuban do it purposely to rally his team, who knows? But it certainly got me and many others taking an interest in a game that meant nothing at all.

Celtics Rip Heat whilst Kobe Provides Again

KG suspended, no worries, Glen 'Big Baby' Davis is ready to step in. And step in he did as the Celtics crushed the Heat at the TD GArden to go 2-0 up in the series. Ray Allen did it from deep, hitting multiple threes as the Celtics proved comfortable winners. How will they fair as the Heat turn it up a notch in Miami in a few days?

Highlights from the night

Big time players were also making notable contributions on the West side of America as Kobe Bryant pulled out the stops to give the LA Lakers a 2-0 lead over the Oaklahoma Thunder, as the Thunder threatened to level the series 1-1.

A Thousand Interests

They say "the key to life is to be interested in a thousand things well but in one thing profoundly."
But what if that one profound interest is made up of a thousand different things?

KG Banned

Kevin Garnett will serve a one game suspension for the Boston Celtics after elbowing Quentin Richardson during game one of the NBA Playoff series between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat.

How is it all going to end?

To steal a phrase our sports commentating friends state side say when confronted by something amazing, 'The Premier League title race back on? Well, what do you know?' It seems we are going to witness the greatest ending to a season in the Premier League's history. Where's your money now? Sadly for Paddy Power, their money has already changed hands, as they have already paid out their bets on Chelsea winning the title. Could it be a £500,000 mistake? (See here for full story)

It was a day that many said would determine the title race. United had the tough task of going to a high flying Man City in the most important Manchester derby of all time, whilst Chelsea played their game aginst derby rivals Tottneham. If United lost or drew and Chelsea won, surely that would be it.

For 91 minutes, that's how it looked like it would pan out. United were about to relinquish any hope of recording an historic 4th consecutive Premier Leage title until one of Sir Alex Ferguson's old guard, Paul Scholes, a man so instrumental in helping United acheive their success over the past 10 years, ghosted into the box and rose to head home Patrice Evra's cross. Again City were beaten in the last minute against United, again it was dramatic, again it gave United title hope.

All eyes then turned to White Hart Lane. How would Chelsea react to the news that United were supposedly 'back in it?' Not very well, it seemed. A penalty from Jermaine Defoe and a superb solo effort from Gareth Bale put Tottenham 2-0 up at the half. Two reckless challenges, the second standing out as clumsy, from John Terry meant he would have the watch the last 20 minutes from the dressing room. It capped a poor day for Terry who was poor throughout the game and has not been at top form in recent weeks. Fabio Capello take note; who was the best English centre half on the day?

Arsenal then felt that a victory over Wigan would give them a hope, albeit one slimmer than Victoria Beckham. 2-0 up with ten mintues to go and it seemed Arsene Wenger's men had forgotten about the pianful defeat earlier in the week to Tottenham. However during the last ten minutes, Wenger's men became boys. Wigan pulled one back, Fabianski then flapped at a cross allowing Bramble to make it 2-2 and Nzogbia sturck a long range winner beautiful enough to win any game. Arsenal are out of the hunt, Untied are back in it and it is still in Chelsea's hands. However only a fool would predict the winner now, sorry Paddy Power.

Arsenal Struck by Rose Thunderbolt

Is that the end for Arsenal? Has their title push finally run out of steam? Whilst i'm hesistant to write them off and out of the hunt for Premier League silverware after seeing them bounce back in the manner they did when the nation said the same thing after the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, i feel this time there is just not enough time left.

They stand 6 points behind the leaders with only a handful of games to go and incredibly, the injuries continue to pile up. For Fabregas, Arshavin, Song and Gallas, add Vermaelen. The defender, who has possibly been the signing of the season in the Premier League, went down in the first half and looks set to be out for 2-3 weeks.

Arsene Wenger has described his Arsenal team as not being mature enough. "If you want to win the league then this is the kind of game you have to win." Here's the thing though, Arsenal started incredibly well. They had all the possesion and looked the most threatening but then came one of those moments you are just happy that you witnessed. Young Danny Rose, who has spent most of the season on loan at Peterborough, struck what must be goal of the season, if not the last two. 25 yards out and the ball dipping from the keeper's punch, Rose caressed the ball with such perfection and skill, it was difficult to see how it was his league debut. It was a strike that belied his years.

The strike rocked Arsenal and after Gareth Bale crept through an open defence to make it two, the outcome looked bleak for Arsene Wenger's side. Robin Van Persie made his long awaited return to the Arsenal first team as a 60th minute sub and single handedly changed the game. It highlighed two key points. It showed just how good he his and what Arsenal's season could have produced had he stayed fit. Secondly it highlighted the lack of threat that Bendtner poses. You could have been mistaken for thinking it was he who had been subbed for RVP.

A late goal meant an Arsenal charge but Tottenham never seemed in danger of throwing it all away. Ledley King and Michael Dawson were awesome. Two English centre backs playing in perfect harmony at club level. Take note Fabio.

To Tottenham's credit, it was hard to believe that this was the same team that were lablled as a 'shambles' in their FA Cup Semi Final loss to Portsmouth. It helped that it was their fiercest rivals Arsenal who came to town as it fueled the fire that the players needed. Harry Redknapp will be hoping that there is still enough coal on that fire as it only gets harder - Chelsea are next in town.

Americans. You've Got To Love Them

Whilst on the subject of The Masters and America, i heard something yesterday that makes me love Americans and their attitude when it comes to sport. Phil Mickleson and Lee Westwood were on the first tee, ready for the final round of the final day. Westwood hit his tee shot to appreciative applause. Mickleson, the crowd's favourite, stepped up and for those who love technical sporting terms, spanked one right down the middle of the fairway. That wasn't the most magical moment. As he struck the ball, almost immediately a member of the crowd, who i assume was larger than life, screamed "You're an animal."

I mean what a statement. It was the second thing to be heard, second only to the sound of the driver hitting Mickleson's ball. Which makes you think, he must have planned to say that and that makes it even more pricelss.

Americans, you have got to love them

Mickleson Triumphs As Woods 'Fails' With Fourth

World number 2 Phil Mickleson sealed his third masters victory with a stunning performance on the last day of the Masters at Augusta. Mickleson produced some breathtaking strokes, including what is being called 'shot of the year' by some for his approach from behind a tree to land within 5 feet of the pin. Enjoy

After all the furore regarding Tiger's personal on goings and his return to the tournament which many predicted he would win, America got the family man for a winner it wanted, even if they won't admit it at first.

I for one was disappointed that Woods didnt win. Regardless of what happened, the man 'is' golf. You can tell when a sportman/women 'becomes' the sport they devote their lives to. It is when the average member of the public who would not usually care, starts to take an interest. Had Woods not played this year's tournament, the viewing figures would have been considerably lower.

Here's the thing though.....why is he still getting it in the neck? Still people complain about his 'attitude.' Why can the man not complain about his performance and his disappointment in hitting bad shots? That is what he is. That is what makes him a cut above the rest. He doesnt make mistakes, well doesn't expect to. In his mind he should hit the perfect stroke each time. So those who say he should have more respect to his sport and his fellow competitors, go to your room. Tiger, keep doing you. Expect to be the best a question why your are not perfect when something goes wrong. Do whatever you want to do, just keep playing golf as you are the only thing that gives me and thousands of others out there a genuine interest.

The Incredible Journey - Portsmouth

Has there ever been a script more magical than this? Take Portsmouth, a club who go from winning the FA Cup one season to no hopers. The manager who brought Cup glory, Harry Redknapp, leaves for a bigger club in Tottenham Hotspur, taking the best players with him. With little money and their star names having jumped ship for wider fame and glory, results start to tumble in the wrong direction and Pompey find themselves sitting bottom of the league. Couple that with a lack of investment and Portsmouth manager Avram Grant would be forgiven for taking a line from Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday, "We're in hell right now gentleman."

Buyers promise to come in and rescue the club but after deeper and more thorough review they realise not even their millions, or in some case billions, can save the club. They enter administration and become the first Premiership club ever to do so, aswell as receiving a nine point deduction. Relegation is now a dangerous and realistic possibility.

Player's wages are not paid and a large number of the club's off field staff are made redundent to clear funds for more imporatant matters. On loan players being paid from parent clubs have to pitch in and pay those players who aren't receiving their wages.

Then on a saturday afternoon in May, the club receive the news that no football fan wants to ever hear about his beloved side. Portsmouth are confirmed to be relgated. It is the end of the road. No longer will they eat at English football's top table. On that same day they have the FA Cup Semi Final, with onlookers saying they have no chance. Yet they prevail, with a shock 2-0 victory deep into extra time. It should be noted that victory came over the former manager Harry Redknapp. It should also be noted that the final deciding goal was scored by Kevin Prince Boateng, released by Tottenham to pave the way for some of Portsmouth's bigger names to head to White Hart Lane. It should be noted that the impossible dream is still alive.

It is said that Avram Grant will be writing a book about Portsmouth's incredible season. He may want to wait one more month as the Fa Cup Final against his old club Chelsea, from whom he was fired for failing to bring European glory, may just provide us with one of the best script endings in sports history.

Robben Stunner Leaves United Shell Shocked

Sir Alex Ferguson has always said his team like to do it the hard way but sadly for all Man United fans, this was a task too tough to overcome. After overturning the first leg deficit quite comfortably by taking a 3-0 leade after 40 minutes, it looked like the tie had been sealed.

Then a piece of naivity from a young defender and United were down to ten men. The perssure then hit them wave after wave and it took something special, truly special to break the padlock. Robben's volley from the edge of the box was a goal worthy of winnign any game regardless of whether it was deserved or not.

With 11 vs 11, this was no contest. Bayern were blown off the park. Rafael had been selected at right back and the reprecussions couldnt have been more contrasting. He was man of the match in the first half. He schakled Ribery to the point where the Frenchman almost didnt want the ball anymore. Then came the second half however and Ribery gave it another go and got inside the full back. 40 yards from goal and running onto his weaker foot. Experienced defenders will tell you there is no danger there. For all the talent for defending and attakcing he has in abundance, Rafael lacks experience and it showed. He tugged him back, the second yellow came out and the game was done for the young Brazilian. Sadly so too for United.

Ferguson now has his eyes set firmly on the league but once again, they will have to do it the hard way. This challenge is achievable however as history tells us, although it seems likely to require 5 wins from 5. Chelsea still have two tough fixtures in Liverpool and Tottenham away. As Sir Alea has said before, it's squeaky bum time.

Superlatives run dry as Messi scores four

There was a brief moment last night that summed up how we all, as football fans felt. Once the final whistle had gone, the camera followed man of the match Lionel Messi around the pitch as he congratulated his team mates on securing their place in the Champions League semi final. Back in the gantry, Sky Sports anchor Richard Keys had the job of filling the airwaves until the Spanish television director decided enough was enough and to cease the on field filming. This is Key's job, his livelihood. He has done this 1000 times and will do it 1000 more. However for the first time, he couldnt do what for years has become second nature to him. He ran out of cliches, ran out of adjectives and ran out of superlatives. He was lost for words. We all were.

In sportsman's careers, there always seems to be a defining moment. A coathanger performance that you can hook all the evidence on when proving how good they really were. With Jonny Wilkinson, it was that night and that kick in Sydney. For Roger Federer it will be the 15th Grand Slam at Wimbledon while for Steven Gerrard it will be that thunderous half volley against Olympiakos in the Champions League to ensure they progressed to the next round. Now add Lionel Messi and last night's 4 goal haul to that list.

Here's the thing...we knew he was good. We knew he was the best player in the world at the present moment but no-one knew, in fact, no-one believed that he or any player could put in a performance like that. It was a performance that is hard to write about because words don't it justice. After Arsenal took a surpising lead, Messi responded within two minutes. A stunning strike from out of nothing. His second came from breathaking build up play while his third was so audacious that even after they showed the reply, you still didnt believe he would do it. It took three replays to make me a believer. Then as the fourth went in those in the Nou Camp and the millions watching world wide went into a frenzy. We were witnessing one of 'those' moments. Some will be able to say they were there while some will only be able to say they watched it. If you are not either of those, get busy and find a way to watch it as it is very possible that something like that will never happen again.

Dynamo - Magician

This kid is class!

One Hell Of An Ending - Duke National Champions

It was close to being the perfect fairytale ending. In fact it was a matter of an inch or so. The thickness of a basketball rim was all that got in the way of a story that would make a great Hollywood sports film.

The underdog defying critics and beating the 'big boys' on the way to the final. Then in the dying seconds of the Chapionship game, a shuddering blind side screen from star player Matt Howard set up teammate George Hayward just inside half court with space to shoot. We were moments away from the greatest ending in sports history. As he rose up off his left foot and let go with incredible accuracy, the Television angle said it was going in. It had to go in. America held it's breath. A nation hoped. Sadly reality intervined. Glass, rim and out. The dream was over

But here's the thing, there is still a great story here. Not only a story of a team earning respect, as Butler showed that they belogned in these Finals but of a coach that can now be described as 'great.' 11 Regional Championships and now four NCAA Tournament Championships added to the Gold medal he won at the 2008 Olympics has finally given him the 'great' tag that many had been tempted to use but wanted a little bit more convincing. Well now you have it. Coach K has acheived greatness, greatness that turned out to only be a rim away.

Chelsea March On To Title While Spurs Slip Up In Race For Fourth

What started as a bad week for Manchester United ended in Similar fashion as strikes from Joe Cole and Didier Drogba made sure Chelsea left Old Trafford with all three points and number one spot in the Barclays Premier League. The title is now theirs to lose. While no run in is easy, Ancelotti's men have the easier upcoming fixtures when compared to United and Arsenal. However only a fool would expect a season that has had so many twists and turns and unbelievable stories to end smoothly. Watch this space but for now it is advantage Ancelotti.

Meanwhile a few places below the title dog fight, there was another twist in the race for the coveted fourth place. Man City brushed aside a Burnley side whose performance matched that of the weather conditions....wet. Spurs have been going well of late but that run came to an end in Sunderland. You can't afford to give away three penalties, even if the taker is Darren Bent. As he showed, he will at least score one of those! Here's the thing though, you need to be fair to Bent, his scoring tally has been impressive. Even more impressive when you think how limited some of his teamates assisting abilities are. Some of those boys couldnt cross a road. Fabio, if you are reading this (you should be), take him to South Africa.

Greatest Streak of All Time?

A streak is an achievement longed for in all sports, a sort of Holy Grail for players and managers. It brings with it a satisfaction in knowing that you are dominant, a level above the other competition around you and that the hours of training and hard work are worth it.

But what is the greatest streak of all time?

Is it the New York Yankess post season streak? 11 straight post season series wins from 1998 till now.

Is it the Boston Celtics 8 consecutive NBA titles from 1959-1966? Not as many teams in the playoff but does that really matter? 8 years of domination says no.

Maybe the 1972 Miami Dolphins? The first undefeated season with the team going 17-0. No last minute loss due to a field goal, no dip in form that allowed a team to steal a win, no resting players once they were guaranteed playoff football. Just consistent domination culminating in a Super Bowl win.

But here's the thing, could it be Connecticut's women's basketball team, with a streak that got me debating the best of all time. The Huskies, as they are known (honestly) have advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) for the 8th time since 2000. Their win streak now stretches to 76 games! Yes, 76 games without losing.

That is an astonishing achievement, regardless of the level of sport. There is no sexism intended here but the level of Women's College basketball compared to the level of the other competitions in the streaks mentioned above is a mismatch. Still, 76 games is complete domination. Put that in footballing terms in the Premier League. That is a team winning every game in the league for two years straight.

The worrying thing for the other colleges around America? They don't seem to show any sign of slowing up.
